Weight loss hack: Stop counting calories and starting counting bites

How many of you have asked yourself these questions: How many calories in that drink? Or, how long will I need to exercise to burn that off? We're sure many of you would agree, counting calories when trying to lose weight can be very addictive. But maybe weve been doing it all wrong.

A study from BYU health science researchers found that those who counted bites while eating over a month's time lost nearly 2 kilograms.

"This study confirms what we already knew: Consuming less food makes a difference," lead author, Josh West, said in a statement. "We're not advocating people starve themselves, what we're talking about is people eating less than they're currently eating."

For the study, 61 participants were asked to count the number of times they lifted food to their mouth and the number of gulps of liquids, besides water, they had each day. They also took 20 to 30 per cent less bites throughout the four weeks.

After a month, those who stuck to the task (41 of the participants) lost an average of nearly 2 kilos, despite changing nothing else about their eating and exercising routine. The other participants struggled with keeping up on the counting of their bites.

"We felt pretty good about how much weight they lost given the relatively short span of the study," West explained. "Now we need to follow up to see if they keep it off, or if they lose more weight."

The research team is now working with BYUs Computer Science on an algorithm capable of counting bites that will be developed with and app and a wearable device. So clever.

"We're consuming considerably more calories than we did a generation ago or two generations ago; at the same time we're much less active," co-author, Ben Crookston, said. "The good news is that you don't have to be extreme calorie cutting. Even a 20 percent reduction in bites makes a difference."

So, perhaps its time to ditch the calorie counting apps and start counting your bites instead.
